EN 342
Cold protection
This standard specifies requirements for garments intended for work in cold environments.
Testing includes:
- Effective thermal insulation (expressed in m²K/W)
- Air permeability – Classes 1 to 3
- Resistance to water penetration – Classes 1 to 2 (optional)
A garment combination (e.g., a two-piece set with jacket and trousers or a coverall) must meet requirements for thermal insulation and air permeability to carry the CE marking for EN 342. Water penetration testing is optional.
Layering System
A complete cold-protection system typically consists of three layers:
- Base layer (next to the skin)
- Insulating mid-layer
- Outer layer with certified garments
Combined with socks, balaclava, gloves, and boots for full protection.
The thermal insulation value determines the minimum temperature at which the body remains comfortable. In the updated version EN 342:2017, the test method now includes air velocity in the calculation, providing a more accurate assessment of performance in windy conditions.
